Maggie is Making a Documentary

I just got this email from a former student, Maggie Carroll. She graduated from the Clinton School of Public Service a couple of years ago and has since been busy with public radio and film work. She also wrote a post for Thunderhead Works on Participatory MediaMaggie is trying to bring to light the issue of children who have a parent in prison. Please consider kicking in to help, she’s half way to her goal. Here, Maggie describes the project:

I am producing and directing a documentary, titled My Video, My Voice. Helping me are five amazing kids, who agreed to carry around cameras…and turn those cameras around to film their own lives.

Each young filmmaker has his or her own unique perspective, but they all have one thing in common: either their mother or father is in prison.

This community video project aims to raise awareness about these kids. One in every 28 children under the age of 18 has a parent in the prison system (one out of every nine African American children has a parent in the prison system.). Yet this issue goes beyond being a statistic. It is real life for over 2 million children living in the United States today.

maggie carrollSome awesome friends of mine helped me make a short, zero-budget version of this in Arkansas, featuring 13 year-old Cartie Braggs, hardworking student and fashion designer extraordinaire.

In order to do this film right, hire a super talented crew, and give this story the attention and time it deserves…we need to raise some funds. I’ll just go ahead and get the exact sum out of the way: I need to raise $14,585 dollars. Yes, that $5 IS crucial.

Right now I’m focusing on the first half of the amount: for pre-production and production costs I need $8,500.

  • Talk to people who have been to prison or have family members in prison, if they are comfortable sharing with you…listen to their stories!
  • Share this Kickstarter by tweeting it to your coworker, spamming it on your aunt’s Facebook wall, and – this is old school so watch out – maybe even just mention it to a few people in person.
