Check out AdLibbing‘s 12 Must Know Stats About Social Media, Fundraising and Cause Awareness. Did you know that “the number of followers nonprofits have on Twitter grew by 264% in 2012”?

Personal Note. Yesterday morning, I got an email from an old friend, Roger Craver. It was short:  Hi Tom. Hope this finds you well.  Hope you enjoy this morning’s Agitator. Keep up the good work. Cheers. —Roger

His post in The Agitator was about… me? Roger’s generous and kind words pointed to my past work and current site (this one). Now it’s my turn: check out this Roger Craver bio/post I found from his colleague, Tom. Back in about 1993 Roger and his Craver, Matthew, Smith (CMS) colleagues Cynthia Hampton and Michael Cervino took a risk to work with a little-known nonprofit, Heifer International. That direct marketing partnership was key in  growing Heifer to its current size. Lesson: Pick your partners wisely!

Roger also mentioned something about the “Agitator Raise,” which turned out to mean about 600 800 of his followers visited Thunderhead Works. A kind of Colbert Bump. Thanks, so much Roger!

Start-up of YouStart-up. Last year I read The Start-up of You co-written (with Ben Casnocha) by LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman. He put an executive summary on the book—where else?—on his LinkedIn profile page (click on the image for a visual summary). If you’re thinking about re-booting your career, or just trying to take your nonprofit to a new level, this book offers solid, timely advice.

Keep us Grounded. This blog focuses mostly on the positive — I guess, I’m just a sunny kind of guy. But a Boston friend sent a link to this post: Letter to a Young Social Entrepreneur: the poor are not the raw material for your salvation. “There is a need for a large dose of skepticism about middle class European and American social entrepreneurs who think they have the answer for the problems of Africa or know what the youth off the housing estates need,” says Liam Black. We certainly need social entrepreneurs. But we also need truth-tellers  like Liam Black to keep us grounded as we try to do good.

“…relationships matter because the people you spend time with shape who you are and who you become. Behavior and beliefs are contagious: you easily “catch” the emotional state of your friends, imitate their actions, and absorb their values as your own. If your friends are the types of people who get stuff done, chances are you’ll be that way, too. The fastest way to change yourself is to hang out with people who are already the way you want to be.” — Reid Hoffman in The Start-up of You
